A portion of a tower crane collapsed in downtown Fort Lauderdale, killing one person and injuring three people Thursday afternoon.

A construction worker on site was killed, Fort Lauderdale Fire Chief Steve Gollan said during a press conference. The crane fell at the site at 333 North New River Drive East, a 43-story building that’s under construction. It’s called Gables Riverwalk.

Gables Residential, an Atlanta-based apartment development firm, is the developer. Kast Construction is the general contractor, according to a notice of commencement filed in 2021. Gables Residential and Kast did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The project is on the northeast corner of North New River Drive East and the Southeast Third Avenue bridge. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the U.S. Coast Guard will be investigating the accident, Gollan said. Two people were transported to the hospital and one person with minor injuries refused treatment.

A platform for equipment staging failed and caused the partial crane collapse, Gollan said. The worker fell from a high floor of the building under construction. The accident left a hole in the bridge, which means the bridge will remain closed, Gollan said.
Property records show an affiliate of Gables Residential paid $33.2 million for the 0.8-acre site in 2021. Wells Fargo provided the firm with a $115 million construction loan later that year.
