South Florida builders respond to increased demand for multi-generational housing

South Florida home builders are increasingly designing homes with distinct living quarters and sometimes even separate kitchenettes and entrances to accommodate the growing demand for multi-generational housing, the Sun Sentinel reported. Pulte Homes and GL Homes have had success building the homes in Palm Beach County, while Toll Brothers has brought the concept to Broward County and Lennar is on the verge of building such homes in Miami-Dade County.

“This is something that’s becoming a necessity,” said Miami housing analyst Lewis Goodkin. “We’ve had more economic pressure than we’ve had in a long time. And it’s not a temporary thing. I think this is going to be with us for a while.”

Pulte and GL both say homes with a “grand retreat” floor plan, which essentially calls for an additional master bedroom above the garage with a private entracnce, have outsold standard homes in Palm Beach County recently. [Sun Sentinel]
