City to give $210M to improve public housing stock
Funds to go toward renovations, social services and lighting
The City Council plans to allocate $210 million to improve conditions at buildings run by the New York City Housing Authority.
Mayor Bill de Blasio and Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito announced today that $50 million of it will go toward renovating existing public housing. Nearly $16 million will be spent on social service programs.
Fifteen developments where crime is especially prevalent are expected to receive a total of $1.5 million in exterior lighting.
“The word today is investments. We are making investments in our public housing, investments that should have been made long ago,” the mayor said, as cited by the New York Daily News. “You know the phrase, ‘He who hesitates is lost’? We are not interested in hesitation.” [NYDN] — Mark Maurer
