McSam Hotel Group’s Sam Chang is forging ahead with plans to build a hotel at 334 West 36th Street, filing for demolition permits from the city yesterday.

Gene Kaufman will design a limited-service hotel for the site between Eighth and Ninth Avenues, likely including 500 rooms and over 20 stories, pending an air rights purchase from the Hudson Yards Development Corporation, the New York Observer reported. Chang does not yet have plans for the hotel’s brand.

The property will include a ground-floor breakfast area, but no full restaurant, Chang told the newspaper.

Building permits filed earlier this month indicated plans for a 20-story, 406-room structure. Those plans appear to have changed, however, as the permits also called for a ground-floor restaurant.

Chang picked up the site for $50.8 million this summer from the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health. The hotel is set to open sometime in 2018. [NYO]Tess Hofmann
