Landmarks drops plan to trim list by about 100 sites
Preservationists and politicians claimed proposal lacked transparency, was rushed along
The city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission scrapped its plan to remove about 100 sites from its oversight.
Preservationists and local politicians opposed the idea, claiming it lacked transparency and was rushed along, the New York Times reported. Meenakshi Srinivasan, the Landmarks chair, said she wanted to give people more time to defend particular buildings.
“We remain committed to making the Landmarks Commission more effective and responsive in its work, and clearing a backlog of items,” Srinivasan said in a statement.
Last week, the panel said it would remove 94 sites and two historic districts from its list, as previously reported. Sites included Long Island City’s Pepsi sign, Manhattan’s Bergdorf Goodman building and the Green-Wood Cemetery. [NYT] — Mark Maurer
