138-acre Big Rock compound being sold at auction

Mansion was originally listed in May, but is now being auctioned off for much less

A 138-acre Big Rock compound that recently listed for $6.3 million is being sold at auction on Tuesday.

The compound at 48W999 Hinckley Road — about 52 miles west of Downtown Chicago — contains a fully stone and brick 11,100-square-foot house that was built in 2004. It features a 7,000-plus-square-foot garage that can store upwards of 30 vehicles attached to the home, according to the Chicago Tribune. The mansion’s lower level features a 33-yard indoor driving range, a wet bar and a safe room. Farmland surrounding the compound is leased, and there’s a guest house separate from the main mansion.

The property was first listed on May 20 for $6.3 million, but it’s now heading to auction. The final day to submit bids is June 30, and listing agent Michael LaFido told Elite Street that the current high bid is $2 million. The garage, specifically, is mentioned as a collector-minded buyer’s boon.

“The collector’s garage is so versatile for whoever,” LaFido said, “There are endless possibilities.”

Large residential parcels of land across the wider Chicagoland area are still up for grabs. Bunker Hill Farms, which is a 490-acre estate in Woodstock, was listed on March 20 for $27 million. At the time, it was the second-most-expensive listed residential property in the region, behind an almost $30 million listing for a lakefront Winnetka mansion. The turnkey estate, which features an 18-hole golf course and a man-made lake, is still on the market.

Estates are changing hands, but at a much slower clip than last year’s residential blitz. An extensively-rehabbed Tudor-style mansion in Winnetka sold just this week to an unnamed buyer for $7.8 million, a new record price for the suburb this year. The price pales in comparison to last year’s record prices, which topped $30 million twice.
