Despite what you hear at dinner parties, it is possible to lose money on the luxury end of the Los Angeles real estate market, as actor Charlie Sheen found out this week when he finally unloaded his 9,000-square foot Mulholland Estates mansion for $3.4 million less than its original asking price.

The faux Mediterranean-style villa at 14003 Aubrey Road went for $6.6 million, which was significantly less than the latest $8.5 million asking price, according to the Los Angeles Times. That number, in fact, represented a $1.5 million cut from the $10 million Sheen was seeking in February.

The veteran television and film actor purchased the home, which was built in 1992, for $7.2 million in 2006, according to city records. Since then, he has extensively renovated the home.

Though much of the gated community is within the Beverly Hills postal zone, Sheen’s seven-bedroom home is located on the less fashionable Sherman Oaks side of the hill.

Even so, it features multiple decorative stone fireplaces, massive beamed ceilings, a 10-seat dining room, seven bathrooms and an extravagant master suite with separate living and screening rooms connected to the caterer-ready kitchen by a dumb waiter.

The grounds feature a basketball court, a pitcher’s mound for batting practice, two swimming pools (there must be times when one isn’t enough), and a state-of-the-art outdoor kitchen with its own 80-inch flat screen television. [LAT]Tina Daunt
