Bill and Melinda Gates paid $43 million for a mansion on the beach in Del Mar, about 20 miles north of San Diego.

The power couple picked up the six-bedroom home from Madeleine Pickens, former wife of the late oil magnate and corporate raider T. Boone Pickens, according to the Wall Street Journal. It’s one of the most expensive deals ever closed in the area.

The house spans 5,800 square feet — nearly the entirety of its oceanfront lot besides a deck that runs the entire length of the property facing the water. There’s a central swimming pool and a 10-person spa overlooking a fire pit, according to the Journal. Brian Guiltinan of the Guiltinan Group was the listing agent and Bruce V. Howard of Krone & Bushard represented the buyers.

The Microsoft co-founder’s roughly $103 billion net worth makes him the second richest person in the world behind Amazon’s Jeff Bezos. The Gates’ maintain a home outside Seattle, but have a sizable real estate portfolio.

Among them, in 2018 they bought a 124-acre farm outside New York City for their daugther for $16 million as well as an East Harlem condominium for $5 million.  A previous California home couple purchased was an $18 million equestrian estate in Rancho Santa Fe, the Journal reported.

In February, they announced they would spend up to $100 million through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to help develop technology to treat the coronavirus. [WSJ]Dennis Lynch
