  • Caltech is planning a 94,000-square-foot lab and office building at 1364 East Green Street in Pasadena.
  • Trammell Crow Company submitted plans for the construction of the facility, which will feature a modern design and subterranean parking garage.
  • The development is part of Caltech's ongoing expansion, with other new buildings recently opened or under construction.

Pasadena could see a new 94,000-square-foot lab building spring up near the California Institute of Technology.

Trammell Crow Company submitted plans to erect a new academic facility for Caltech at 1364 East Green Street on land owned by the school, Urbanize Los Angeles reported. The developer presented its proposal at a preliminary consultation with the Pasadena Design Commission on Tuesday.

The structure would contain 93,539 square feet of office space across three to four stories and have a three-level, 280-slot subterranean parking garage

The 41,573-square-foot parcel at the southeast corner of East Green Street and South Holliston Avenue currently houses a surface parking lot built in 1997. Documents submitted for the project call the location “an urbanistic transitional point between the verdant neighborhoods south of Del Mar Boulevard and the larger and denser character of the developments north of the site.”

City planners will consider several designs for the lab building, but the prevailing contemporary design features clean lines and glass panels on the first three floors. The fourth floor would be set back from East Green Street to allow for an outdoor terrace

At four stories, it would be the tallest building in the vicinity. The nearest multifamily, religious and educational buildings range from one to three stories.

The building would be built next to St. Philip the Apostle Church and across the street from Hill Avenue Branch Library. It would be in the academic heart of town, situated half a block west of Pasadena City College and two blocks north of Caltech campus.

The proposal is part of Caltech’s recent footprint expansion. The Ginsburg Center for Quantum Precision Measurement, now under construction at 1200 East California Boulevard, is aiming to open in the fall of next year. The school’s newest building, the Resnick Sustainability Center, opened last fall.

If the plan moves forward, it would progress to the Design Commission’s Concept and Final Design Review phase before heading off to the Pasadena City Council for approval.
