Norwalk city officials are considering a proposal for affordable housing development near the Interstate 5 freeway.
The Norwalk Planning Commission reviewed a proposal from developer Abbey Road for a new four-story building at 11606 Firestone Boulevard, Urbanize Los Angeles reported. The site currently houses a surface parking lot along the major thoroughfare.
North Hills-based Abbey Road is looking to build 90 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments set aside for rent to low-income and extremely-low-income households. The low-rise development would come complete with a community room, kitchen, offices for management and supportive services staff, and subterranean parking for 80 vehicles.
Abbey Road is pursuing similar affordable housing developments in the San Fernando Valley. Last month, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a $3 million loan to support Abbey Road’s development of The Main apartments, a 64-unit affordable housing project at 15302 Rayen Street in North Hills. That four-story building will offer studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom units, with some designated for renters earning up to 30 percent of the area median income.
Next door at 15314 Rayen Street, Abbey Road is also in development on The Rigby, a four-story, 64-unit affordable housing development that is also designed to serve transition-age youth, and homeless individuals. Both facilities will have amenities including computer rooms, fitness rooms, bike storage and rooftop decks.
Besides the unnamed Norwalk development, Abbey Road is also in pre-development on other projects across the Los Angeles area.
In Downey, the developer has proposed turning a portion of the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church site at 10354 Downey Avenue into housing for transition-age youth and homeless Angelenos. That proposal calls for 60 units in studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom floor plans. And in Pasadena, the firm is seeking construction of a three-story affordable housing project for transition-age youth. The Starr, as the project is known, would have 56 studios and one one-bedroom unit for an on-site manager.
