Discount retailer Wal-Mart’s plan to open a store along Miami’s downtown corridor has drawn opposition from community residents and city officials. A proposed waterfront site near the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts remains a particular focus of criticism, with foes saying it would create traffic problems in an already congested area. The site’s developer, Maefield Development Corp. is in talks with Wal-Mart representatives to have the retail giant occupy about 170,000 square feet on the second floor of its planned five-story retail complex known as City Square, which is planned for 1431-1451 N. Bayshore Drive. Wal-Mart said it has not yet confirmed a site.
