The Palm Beach Town Council rejected an alternate proposal for the
“Reach 8” beach-fill plan from the project’s critics. The proposal
would have scaled the project down to a dune restoration, with
additional fill south of the Lake Worth Pier. The town says the
project, dredging 724,000 cubic yards of sand to restore dunes and
reconstruct Reach 8, is needed to restore the eroded shoreline and
protect oceanfront properties, but protesters say it will be harmful to
near-shore reefs.
