A Florida Supreme Court ruling, dealing with a case in Escambia County, has declared that voter referendums are not required when the government spends community-redevelopment money to pay off bond debt. This decision reverses an earlier decision that could have restricted financing to Miami’s $3 billion redevelopment plan. The Escambia ruling is also likely to spell an end to the ongoing lawsuit of car dealer Norman Braman, who has been fighting the use of public financing for construction of the Florida Marlins’ new $515 million facility.
