The South Florida Water Management District, charged with making a decision on the state’s behalf about a proposed land deal with U.S. Sugar, now has one week to decide whether to approve a $1.34
million contract for the state’s purchase of the land. U.S. Sugar’s
board of directors approved the plan yesterday to sell 180,000 acres to
the state for Everglades restoration, in what has been labeled the
largest conservation land buy in the state’s history. The Water
Management District, which is responsible for Everglades restoration,
plans to borrow most of the money for the land purchase. The contract
U.S. Sugar approved yesterday gives the company two months to entertain
better offers for the land.
