William Douglas bought a $9 million waterfront home in Boca Raton with
$1,700 in his checking account. In the negotiations, he asserted he had
$1 million in an escrow account, and gave an $800,000 check as a down
payment on the 10,000-square-foot, six-bedroom mansion. He was arrested
Monday on four felony counts of issuing a worthless check, grand
larceny and organizing a scheme to defraud in connection to the
fraudulent purchase of the home in September. Seller Rocco Mele said he
later discovered Douglas had a previous fraud arrest.
