The South Florida Water Management District’s deal with U.S. Sugar for a 180,000-acre, $1.34 billion parcel of land has been approved,
but financial and other hurdles remain for the project. There has been
a legal challenge to the district’s financing plan, which involves
borrowing money, and it goes to court in February. There are also
ongoing leases for parts of the U.S. Sugar parcel that could interfere
with Everglades restoration.
