A new Miami ordinance requires property owners to register empty and
abandoned homes. As the foreclosure epidemic has spread, empty homes
and businesses have created opportunities for local criminals,
but the Neighborhood Enhancement Team for Miami’s upper east side
plans to check each property registered under the city ordinance. Team
administrators plan to keep an eye out for open doors and windows at each
building. Registering an abandoned property costs $250.
