A Broward County investigation has found 237 homeowners in Sunrise who reportedly claimed $21.8 million worth of illegal homestead tax breaks. These
homestead exemptions are available only on Floridians’ primary
residents. Many of the homeowners who claimed the exemptions allegedly
left the state and rented out their South Florida properties. Sunrise
officials and the county Property Appraiser’s office found the fraud
by comparing city utility bills to the tax exemptions.
