After losing his job in January, local architect Sergio Santos could no longer afford the $500 per month room he rented in Boca Raton. Instead, he found a job as a waiter and rented a five-and-a-half by 14-foot room, smaller than many closets, in Delray Beach. Santos, who pays $150 per month for the room, built a loft space for his bed and turned a ceiling panel into a bulletin board. Shelves double as a ladder up to the loft space.
