Palm Beach Gardens tax goof

About 20,000 Palm Beach Gardens homeowners got property tax notices that had gone up 10 times their previous year’s rates, but the tax hike proved to be an error. Red-faced officials said they’d accidentally sent out the notices with the decimal place in the wrong position, multiplying tax rates by 1.49 per $1,000 of assessed value. The correct rate is 0.149. Finance Administrator Allan Owens said that while he’s gotten plenty of irate calls, he’s able to give good news about the actual size of the bills.
