A sextet of Destin homeowners appeared before the U.S. Supreme Court Wednesday, in a case that could have far-reaching implications for the federal government’s ability to control actions on private property. The Panhandle homeowners are suing because a beach restoration project opened their private oceanfront to the public, and they want compensation. The judges seemed divided, the Miami Herald reported, and a favorable ruling could slow down beach restoration efforts statewide, and also shift the rules under which government can affect private land with actions more generally.
