Sunny Isles Beach Mayor Norman Edelcup wants to press on with a plan
to build a 100,000-square-foot aquatic center to serve as a
centerpiece visitor attraction. The planned Wometco Aquatic Center
would be five stories and include a garage, restaurants, shops and two
banquet halls supporting a three-story aquarium with a stingray
petting tank. Wometco Enterprises, the owner and operator of the
Seaquarium on Virginia Key, has joined with Eduardo Castiñeira,
president and CEO of Axioma3Architects, and presented a site plan to
city commissioners. The current time frame for a completed project,
which does not yet have a publicly disclosed price tag, would have the
aquatic center completed by 2013. [Miami Today]
