Garry Souffrant, the former pastor of the God First Ministries in Miami
Gardens, and his wife, Yvonne, were each sentenced yesterday after
being convicted of a mortgage scheme financed with drug money. Garry
was sentenced to 20 years in prison, and Yvonne received a shorter,
four-and-a-half year sentence. The couple was convicted of conspiracy to defraud banks in the purchase of 32 properties in
Miami-Dade. U.S. District Judge Paul Huck found that Garry Souffrant
had committed perjury and obstructed justice. He was also alleged to
have brought his brother in on the plan, but his brother, Gamaliel
Souffrant, was acquitted. The IRS, FBI and local police investigated
the crimes. [Miami Herald]
