HUD awards $189 million in housing grants

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is giving $189 million in grants to transform public and assisted housing, it announced today. The funding is allocated for two initiatives: $124 million is going toward the Hope Revitalization Program, which changes neighborhoods with distressed public housing into revitalized mixed-income communities, and $65 million is for Choice Neighborhoods, a pilot program which aims to use housing transformation as way to develop communities. “This funding will help continue that work to transform public housing projects and improve outcomes for tens of thousands of public housing tenants,” said Sandra Henriquez, HUD’s assistant secretary for public housing.
