Lending true meaning to the term “penny-pinching,” a Washington State business owner was so irked by the $333 fine for his overdue property taxes that he showed up to the county treasurer’s office to pay the bill with 33,000 pennies, according to the Ellensburg Daily Record. The man, Ron Spears, sits on the city council. His original $34 tax bill was due in April, but he said business is down at his Spears Interiors shop and he didn’t have the money at the time. Arriving before Treasurer Deanna Panattoni with buckets full of coins, Spears was refused since the office didn’t have the resources to count them, Panattoni said. Ultimately, Spears gave up the act and agreed to pay his taxes conventionally. [AP via Gawker]
