Bal Harbour Shops proposes expansion

The owners of the upscale Bal Habour Shops are
considering a significant expansion of their property, with plans for a
movie theater, 50 new designer retail shops and another department
store, among others. “We have hundreds of luxury merchants that want to
come to Bal Harbour,” Whitman said. “Unfortunately we don’t have enough
space. If we don’t expand they’re going to go somewhere else: Aventura,
South Beach, Merrick Park or Lincoln Road. Then they become stronger and
we become weaker.” It would be the first major expansion of the Shops
complex, which is 46 years old. The plans are preliminary at this stage.
