Broward County leads the state with 1,638 applications for the state’s
$1 billion foreclosure prevention program, according to housing
officials. The lead in applications for aid is not a surprise, said Roy
Oppenheim, a foreclosure defense lawyer in Weston. “I hear one story
after another,” he said. “It’s heartbreaking. And I don’t have a quick
fix.” Miami-Dade County was second in the state with 1.027 applications
after just the first week. The Hardest Hit program intends to cover
mortgage payments for homeowners who are either unemployed or in
low-paying jobs which cannot cover the payments. Ultimately, the state
expects the program to help around 40,000 homeowners. [Sun
