Casinos could harm South Florida’s economy, Beacon Council President
Frank Nero said yesterday. The council is Miami-Dade County’s economic
development agency. According to Nero, who worked in New Jersey politics
before coming to Florida, the casinos would end up being “vacuum
cleaners” that would draw customers from nearby establishments, and
potentially have “chilling” impacts on areas like Wynwood and the Design
District. “I see some of the same issues, some of the same promises and
some of the same comments by the casino industry trying to get it
approved in New Jersey,” he said. [Miami
