Two of the biggest South Florida-based music stars, Jimmy Buffett and Gloria Estefan, are joining forces in an attempt to save the Miami Marine Stadium.
Buffett and Estefan are part of a fundraising event at the Coral Gables Museum on Jan. 9, the Miami Herald reported. Both plan to participate in a group discussion moderated by NBC 6 anchor Jackie Nespral about their memories of the waterfront stadium. Buffett in 1986 released his first home video from a concert shot at the stadium, which was destroyed by Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
Coral Gables Museum is currently operating an exhibit about the 50-year old stadium on Virginia Key called “Concrete Paradise.” Architect Hilario Candela designed the stadium. The stadium site was transferred to the City of Miami by the pioneering Matheson family after Hurricane Andrew. [Miami Herald] — Eric Kalis
