The Palm Beach Town Council is expected to decide tomorrow when it will vote on repealing the Royal Poinciana Way zoning ordinance or the residents will in a referendum.

The PUD-5 zoning amendments would offer an alternative for redeveloping the five-acre block surrounded by Sunset Avenue, North County Road, Bradley Place and Royal Poinciana Way. The stretch contains a bank, bars, eateries, several apartments and small retail outlets.

Advocates of the changes said it gives property owners incentives to renovate properties that do not have much impact of the street’s character. Those incentives include looser parking rules and heightened residential density.

Critics are concerned that it will spur excess development and increase traffic issues. The zoning changes would expire after five years unless the town council opts to renew them. [Palm Beach Daily News]Mark Maurer
