One of Canada’s wealthiest businessmen sold a waterfront house in Bal Harbour for $69.5 million, The Real Deal has learned.
The deal marks a record for Bal Harbour.
Patrick Dovigi, a former professional hockey player who founded and leads a major Canadian waste management company called Green For Life Environmental, sold the property at 276 Bal Bay Drive in an off-market deal, according to sources. The home is partially built.
The buyer is unknown, as the deed has not yet been recorded. Douglas Elliman’s Dina Goldentayer, who declined to comment, brokered the sale, according to social media.
The sale, which closed on Tuesday, marks a record for Bal Harbour, beating the $54.9 million trade of three adjacent lots on Bal Bay Drive in 2021.
Dovigi played for the National Hockey League’s Edmonton Oilers team in 1997. He later founded Toronto-based GFL, now one of the largest waste management companies in North America following its 2018 merger with Waste Industries, an American company. Last year, he was named the wealthiest CEO in Canada, according to the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.
Dovigi has called South Florida home for years. In 2023, he sold a Fisher Island condo for $20 million.
Dovigi owned the 1-acre property at 276 Bal Bay via an LLC that paid $41.5 million in 2023 for the lot, which included a teardown. Billionaire Shari Arison of the prominent Arison family that owns Carnival Cruise Lines, sold the property to Dovigi.
Oren Alexander, who is in jail awaiting his federal sex trafficking trial, brokered the previous sale. His oldest brother is married to a member of the Arison family. Oren’s father Shlomy Alexander’s firm, the Alexander Group, is listed as the general contractor for Dovigi’s home, filings show.
Other recent sales in Bal Harbour include the $17.5 million trade of the waterfront home at 74 Bal Bay Drive. The Falic family, owners of the Duty Free Americas empire, sold the property at the end of last year.
In the fall, Brazilian footballer Neymar paid $26 million for a waterfront lot in Bal Harbour.
