Stan Kroenke takes crown as US’ largest private landowner

LA Rams owner, real estate mogul holds 2.7M acres and counting

Los Angeles Rams owner and real estate magnate Stan Kroenke is now the largest private landowner in the country.

The billionaire developer purchased 937,000 acres of noncontiguous land in New Mexico last month, increasing his total holdings to more than 2.7 million acres across the American West and Canada, the New York Times reported, citing data from private land holdings tracker The Land Report.

The New Mexico land buy marks the largest single land purchase in the United States since 2011. Kroenke owns approximately 60 million square feet of commercial space across the country, including the Rams’ home of SoFi Stadium in Inglewood and the surrounding Hollywood Park development and other properties in Denver. In addition to the Los Angeles Rams, Kroenke also owns the Colorado Avalanche, Denver Nuggets and Colorado Mammoth teams as well as the Arsenal men’s and women’s soccer teams in the U.K.

Kroenke’s new ranch land in New Mexico was sold by the heirs of Henry Singleton, founder of tech company Teledyne. Details around the transaction, including price, were not disclosed.

Kroenke’s last notable land acquisition was in 2016 when he bought the 535,000-acre Waggoner Ranch in Texas. That property, the largest contiguous ranch in the Lone Star State, hadn’t changed hands since its founding in 1849. Other significant land purchases by the Kroenke Sports & Entertainment head include the 2019 acquisition of Winecup Gamble Ranch in Nevada, which Kroenke bought from former Reebok chairman Paul Fireman, and the 2012 purchase of Montana’s 124,000-acre Broken O Ranch.

Land is becoming an increasingly attractive asset for investors in part because “it’s a proven return on investment in terms of the slow, steady appreciation,” Eric O’Keefe, editor of The Land Report, told the New York Times. In recent years, billionaires have been buying land in larger numbers than ever before. A decade ago, the average quantity held by the top 100 landowners was 378,000 acres, but that number has increased to 430,000 acres today.Chris Malone Méndez
