In the latest plan proposed for the remains of the World Trade Center staircase, Governor Spitzer’s chief of downtown redevelopment has suggested preserving only the structure’s steps, and inserting them into the underground World Trade Center memorial museum. Another artifact that could occupy the WTC memorial museum is a 35-foot-tall steel beam known as the “Last Column,” which was the last piece of the Twin Towers removed from Ground Zero. It may soon be brought back to the site from its temporary home in Kennedy Airport, and would be housed at Ground Zero as the memorial museum is built around it over the next two years. more [NYT] and more [Post]
