Retailers are looking to increase security measures to protect
shoppers, after a shooting spree at an Omaha mall killed eight people
yesterday. Malachy Kavanagh, vice president of the International
Council of Shopping Centers, a Manhattan-based trade group, said
airport-style metal detectors and pat-downs would put off shoppers.
Dennis Farrell, chief executive of Manhattan-based Federal Shield
Consulting, a security firm, said malls might instead hire more guards
and training them to follow suspicious customers.
