Lender lobbying spurred mortgage mess

Subprime lenders accelerated the mortgage meltdown by curtailing
regulations on loans to borrowers with sub-standard credit in states
like New Jersey. Ameriquest Mortgage Co. gave more than $20 million in
political donations to legislators in New Jersey and Georgia, where new
laws were relaxed. Critics say those victories led to more reckless
lending around the country.
