A new law requiring rental permits that is meant to deter overcrowding has gone into effect in Southampton. Applicants must submit floor plans, a property survey, a certificate of occupancy, and a certification of code compliance from an engineer or architect if the property has failed a town inspection. The law, which once covered only summer rentals, now applies to all homes. The minimum fine for lacking a rental permit is $1,500.
