The National Guard has put the brakes on the city’s plans to replace ten historic homes in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, known as Admirals’ Row, with a supermarket. Demolition has been “delayed indefinitely,” disappointing some neighborhood leaders who say residents lack access to fresh produce. Preservationists have called for saving the mid-1800s homes, which sit on an island of six federally-owned acres (the city controls the rest of the Navy Yard). The National Guard is selling the property, and the city gets first dibs. The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corp. chief says the property isn’t worth buying if the homes must be preserved for an estimated $20 million. A series of public meetings begins in March.
