The area where Alexander Hamilton once called home, Hamilton Heights, still boasts some of the lowest priced housing in Manhattan: about half the average price for the same property located 50 or 60 blocks south. A recent wave of prewar rental buildings converted to condos, where a one-bedroom goes for about $300,000, have been selling steadily; 70 units were sold last year by just one firm. Although prices have recently gone up, they remain low by Manhattan standards and are often negotiable. In one case, a house priced at $2 million sold for almost $500,000 under the asking price.
