The Department of Correction is now seeking proposals for a $240 million redevelopment of the Brooklyn House of Detention on Atlantic Avenue, which would double the jail’s capacity as well as add ground-floor retail. The city-proposed expansion of the detention center, which hasn’t housed inmates since 2003, has been criticized by community groups that say they weren’t given a chance to weigh in on the expansion. The city hopes to pick a developer by July.
