The retail vacancy rate in Astoria,
Queens, is on the rise, according to a report by Rep. Anthony Weiner’s
office. The study shows the vacancy rate among locally owned stores is
at 13 percent, slightly higher than the borough-wide average of 12
percent. A year ago, the borough’s average was half that. On Steinway
Avenue in Astoria, 38 of 302 businesses are closed or closing, the
report states.
