The city allowed construction to
resume yesterday at the Goldman Sachs headquarters in Battery Park
City. Crews had been barred from working on the site since April 1 when
a hammer fell 17 stories from the unfinished 43-story tower, smashing
the rear window of a taxi. According to Tishman Construction
executives, the hammer fell from a carpenter’s tool belt and passed
through a three-inch opening between the hoist elevator car the worker
was in and the building. The Department of Buildings lifted its
stop-work order after inspectors were satisfied the company had
fulfilled its promise to add more safeguards.
