Openings and closings: Babel Fair opens, Elvie’s Turo-Turo closes … and more


Babel Fair at 260 Elizabeth Street, Elvie’s Turo-Turo at 214 First Avenue

In the East Village, burger joint Patty and Bun has opened at 61 West 8th Street near Fifth Avenue.

In Soho, Babel Fair accessory shop is open for business at 260 Elizabeth Street between Houston and Prince streets, carrying designer wares for under $200.t

Chinatown is now home to Grand Bo Ky restaurant at 214-216 Grand Street on the corner of Elizabeth Street.

Another Crumbs location will open at 20 Lexington Avenue on the corner of 23rd Street. Lenny’s sandwich shop has leased 1,700 square feet at 370 Lexington Avenue near Grand Central Terminal.

In the Meatpacking District, the Henry Beguelin boutique will be closing its doors at 18 Ninth Avenue at the corner of 13th Street in January 2010 and will be looking for a larger location.

In Hell’s Kitchen, new pre-Prohibition themed American restaurant Stecchino has opened at 765 Ninth Avenue Near 51st Street.

In Midtown, the Garden wine bar and restaurant has opened in the lobby of the Four Seasons Hotel at 57 East 57th Street at the corner of Park Avenue.

Lalique Haviland jewelry boutique has opened at the corner of 58th Street and Madison Avenue. 

On the Upper East Side, the Museum of Arts and Design opened a pop-up shop in Kate’s Paperie at 1282 Third Avenue at the corner of 74th Street today, according to a press release sent yesterday.

In Brooklyn, retailer Foxy & Winston at 392 Van Brunt Street in Red Hook will officially open this Saturday. 

Finally, in the realm of name-changing, after 10 years under the name “Houston’s” the restaurant at Park Avenue South and 27th Street has changed its name to Hillstone, the namesake of its parent company, according to the Flatiron 23rd Street Partnership.

Looking to branch out, Shake Shack proprietor Danny Meyer is looking to open a location in Miami next year. 

Amid these openings, there have also been some closings. In Soho, the Banana Republic menswear shop at 528 Broadway between Third and Bleecker streets that closed for renovations in April is now closed for good and the Gap will open its first Soho location in the space Nov. 13. In the East Village, Filipino joint Elvie’s Turo-Turo has shuttered at 214 First Avenue on the corner of 13th Street. In Midtown, plus-size women’s clothing store Avenue has shuttered at 710 Fifth Avenue at the corner of 44th Street. The company’s other stores in Brooklyn and Harlem will remain open.
