Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter is lobbying city officials and developer Douglas Durst to convert the former IRT Powerhouse building on the Far West Side to a new Manhattan home for the George Eastman House, the Rochester-based photography museum, the Observer reported. The Beaux-Arts property, on 59th Street and 11th Avenue, is owned by Con Edison, which uses it as a steam-generating plant and isn’t exactly amenable to the plan. Carter isn’t the first to eye the building: several preservation groups have tried to get it landmarked and converted in the past. But despite the media mogul’s influence, the company still says it has no plans to leave. [NYO] and [NYO]
