Bronx park set to reopen after decade-long cleanup
Starlight Park — a portion of the Bronx River Greenway — will open this spring following a more than 10-year clean-up and renovation, the New York Times reported. But despite the addition of the park to the trail that connects the South Bronx to Westchester, even when open, it will be difficult to reach.
The primary issue is a yet-to-be-built access bridge, which goes over Amtrak rails and the Bronx River. The bridge was the subject of impasse between Amtrak and the state Department of Transportation over expense issues. Talks between both sides are being nudged by local politicians.
“It’s an incomplete vision,” Kellie Terry-Sepulveda, who leads the Bronx River Alliance, responsible for rehabilitating the park, told the Times. “Our issue is about sustainability. It’s a people issue. That’s the resource that doesn’t run out. We have an obligation to make sure everybody has access.” [NYT] —Zachary Kussin
