The city is in a pickle with the historic Astoria Park diving pool: Cost overruns to convert the landmark into a 500-seat theater has left no money for bathrooms — yes, bathrooms.
The $4.3 million price tag for the work is four times the amount that the Parks Department had budgeted, the New York Daily News reported.
The project still needs public review and must be approved by the city Landmarks Preservation Commission.
The pool was the site of the U.S. Olympic diving trials in 1936 and 1964. As previously reported, the proposed conversion ran into fundraising problems. [NYDN] —Zachary Kussin
