Mayoral hopeful Carrion helped push Peter Fine’s Bronx megaproject, city investigation reveals
Mayoral hopeful and former Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion helped affordable housing developer Peter Fine win approval for his $300 million Bronx project, according to a city Department of Investigation report seen by the New York Daily News.
In late 2006, after Fine complained to Carrion that Boricua Village — Fine’s massive mixed-use residential and retail project in the Bronx’s Melrose section — was hamstrung by problems in the approval process, Carrion arranged an “urgent” meeting with two key city agencies. Following this intervention, the project moved along, and a few months later, Carrion, in his role as borough president, officially signed off on it. Fine has donated thousands of dollars in cash to Carrion’s political campaigns, and also recommended an architect for renovations to Carrion’s Bronx home.
During a career where he’s built up a reputation as one of the city’s top affordable housing developers and also gained fame as a co-producer of the Tony award-winning play “In the Heights,” Fine has had numerous legal troubles, as The Real Deal previously reported. [NYDN] –Hiten Samtani
