Hearst’s legendary penthouse goes on the market for $38M

Co-op has 15-foot ceilings and 7,000 square feet in terrace space

A co-op unit formerly owned by publishing tycoon William Randolph Hearst is asking $38 million.

The seven-bedroom unit at the Clarendon, located at 137 Riverside Drive, features 15-foot-high ceilings and 7,000 square feet of terraces, the Wall Street Journal reported. Brown Harris Stevens broker Paula Del Nunzio has the listing.

Hearst acquired the building in 1913 after his landlord denied his request for more space, the Wall Street Journal reported. He later turned five floors of the building into his own private aerie. Part of that massive apartment is now up for sale. Investor Benedict Silverman currently owns the unit, which he renovated extensively in the 1990s. [WSJ]Mark Maurer
