From the South Florida website: The Miami Marlins may be 11 years removed from their last appearance in the World Series, but the region still commands substantial attention from the baseball world for its real estate market.
Over the past year, a slew of big Major League Baseball names bought and sold high-end homes and condos throughout South Florida. Active stars like Alex Rodriguez and Carlos Beltran from the New York Yankees and retired ballplayers including Magglio Ordonez and Edgar Renteria made news for completing expensive transactions in the area.
In preparation for the first pitch Tuesday night in Kansas City, The Real Deal took a look at some notable examples of pricey real estate deals involving MLB players:
Alex Rodriguez -> While serving a season-long suspension for performance-enhancing drug use, the New York Yankees slugger kept busy building a spec home in Miami and selling a Miami Beach condo for a profit. A-Rod reportedly hired contractor Newport Property Construction to erect a house in the Ponce Davis neighborhood on land he purchased for $2.7 million in 2013. In April, Rodriguez generated a $500,000 return on the $2.6 million sale of a unit in the Mei building in the mid-Beach area.
Carlos Beltran -> This popular outfielder — another Yankee — found a buyer for his mansion at 3515 Windmill Ranch Road in Weston earlier this month. Betran received $4.1 million, or $400,000 below the asking price, for the property. The mansion has eight bedrooms, nine-and-a-half bathrooms, a billiard room, exercise room, library, catering kitchen, chef’s kitchen, wine room and industrial elevator. Other features include a putting green, basketball court, greenhouse and swimming pool. Beltran paid $3.8 million for the property in July 2013.
Magglio Ordonez -> Former Detroit Tigers’ outfielder Ordonez put his Fort Lauderdale home up for sale in August. The $4.39 million asking price is close to what the retired ballplayer originally doled out 10 years ago. The 181 Nurmi Drive house has six bedrooms, seven bathrooms, a gourmet chef’s kitchen, an office, elevator, pool, summer kitchen, enough dockage for an 80-foot yacht, a bar and a spa.
Edgar Renteria -> Back in Miami, this former Marlins World Series hero paid $3.6 million for a Miami Beach residence in July. The 4,000-square-foot home is located at 6341 Allison Road on the city’s Allison Island. Renteria sold a different Allison Island property for about $8.3 million in January 2013.
Yunel Escobar -> In May, the Tampa Bay Rays shortstop picked up a Miami River penthouse to go along with his two single-family homes in Miami. Escobar paid $1 million for the three-bedroom condo at the Ivy building, which is part of the Riverfront complex.
