Andy Warhol’s lease for his very first New York City studio is hitting the auction block next week.
The Pop Art pioneer rented a former firehouse at 159 East 87th Street, between Lexington and Third avenues, for $150 per year, Curbed reported. He had written a letter and requested the space after outgrowing the workspace in his nearby apartment.
The lease, which he signed December 1962, is slated to sell for up to $12,000 when Sotheby’s auctions it off April 1 at 8 p.m.
In 2013, a four-bedroom apartment at 1342 Lexington Avenue owned by Warhol for two years sold for $5.5 million. [Curbed] — Mark Maurer
