Landmarks approves HFZ’s changes to historic Gilsey House

The Landmarks Preservation Commission signed off on changes to the historic Gilsey House in NoMad that will enable Ziel Feldman’s HFZ Capital Group to build a 64-story, 796-foot-tall condominium tower at 8 West 30th Street.

While Landmarks had previously approved other facets of HFZ’s proposal for the site – including the restoration of the landmarked Marble Collegiate Church, the demolition of three row houses and the creation of a park where the now-demolished Bancroft Building once stood – it found the proposed restoration of the Gilsey House wanting.

HFZ responded to recommendations that the restoration of the Gilsey House bring it closer to the historic condition of the property in the early 20th century, according to New York YIMBY. HFZ has now done just that, with Landmarks chair Meenakshi Srinivasan calling the developer’s proposal a “very rich plan.”

Feldman’s firm will pay for the restoration and the continued upkeep of the various landmarks being affected by its plans for the property, which require air rights from both the Gilsey House and the Marble Collegiate Church.

HFZ will now need to file its plans with the city’s Department of Buildings and provide Landmarks with DOB filing drawings before permits for the project can be issued. [NY YIMBY]Rey Mashayekhi
